Job Position Overview

The Structural Engineer is responsible for the interpretation of design criteria, related structural analysis, and creation of permit and construction drawings and specifications.  The position requires coordination with construction management and field personnel, suppliers, vendors and other design team members.  The Structural Engineer must be able to work on several projects at the same time and ensure timely completion of each project deliverable. 

Essential Job Skills/Qualifications

  • 4-year civil or structural engineering degree or equivalent technical training and related experience.

  • 3 to 5 years’ experience in reinforced concrete, steel, and wood design and analysis of foundations, concrete or steel structures.

  • Professional Engineer certification preferred.

  • Ability to read and interpret construction documents.

  • Familiarity with all applicable building codes.

  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written, with both engineers and non-technical individuals.  Ability to work well with others.

  • Advanced knowledge of construction methods and materials.

  • Strong organization, multi-tasking and time management skills.

  • Self-motivation and attention to details.

  • Strong computer skills, including CAD, MicroSoft Excel and Word. 

  • Proficiency in structural analysis programs.

  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and strong work ethics.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of projects and owner information.

 Job Responsibilities

  1. Analyze, design and create construction documents for various structures and structural elements including, but not limited to, structural steel, reinforced concrete, wood and masonry building systems; soil retention systems; shallow and deep foundations including spread footings, drilled shafts and helical piles; press foundations; formwork systems; shoring and reshoring systems; and other items as assigned.  Ensure all designs follow governing codes and standards.

  2. Work with project managers to develop solutions to field problems/difficulties.

  3. Assist Marketing or Construction Management personnel with preliminary designs for bidding or preliminary costing of projects.

  4. Receive and respond to all engineering related questions or requests from field personnel, project management and/or marketing personnel.

  5. Attend construction progress meetings as required.

  6. Communicate directly with customers dealing with in-depth engineering/technical responses.

  7. Check all drawings for accuracy. 

  8. Conduct peer reviews of other team member’s work as requested.

  9. Assists with pre-construction activities as needed:  construction planning and design; interpretation of design and drawings; application of construction methods; bid packages.

  10. Carefully review owner provided equipment drawings and associated loads and coordinate foundations designs accordingly.

  11. Interpret various design discipline drawings; prepare takeoffs; research and recommend resolutions to drawing interpretation problems, conflicts and errors.  Advise estimators on creative methods or shortcuts that may be utilized during construction.

  12. Prepare drawings and sketches to support construction work, change orders, estimates, etc.

  13. Review or prepare submittals, erection plans, demolition plans, sheeting designs, etc. as needed.

  14. Coordinates with Construction Project Managers, Superintendents or Lead personnel regarding construction means and methods and related problem solving.

  15. Coordinate and liaise with Engineering Consulting firms.

  16. Review, analyze and resolve field construction problems.

  17. Provide technical direction and assistance to Superintendents, Project Engineers and Foremen.

  18. Assist with constructability reviews and value engineering functions.  Recommend new (or improved) construction processes, equipment, material, techniques and methods.

  19. Ensure all completed work complies with applicable codes, drawings and specifications, coordinates inspections and testing.

  20. Maintains as-built drawings; posts RFI, bulletin and ASI as appropriate.

  21. Maintains RFI logs and timely response to job questions.

  22. Develops, implements and administers project engineering procedures and other work documents, tracks and logs documentation

  23. Ensures correct setup and maintenance of document and plan filing system.

  24. Prepares for and attends pre-construction and hand-off meetings.

  25. Additional duties, as required.

Working Conditions

Physical demands:  Some lifting may be required (up to 50 lbs), walking, standing, sitting, talking/hearing, keyboarding, writing and reading.

Environmental conditions:  Work primarily performed in a controlled indoor environment.  Some travel/work to construction jobsites.
