Job Position Overview

The MEP Designer is responsible for creating, developing and reviewing all documents related to mechanical, electrical and/or plumbing.  Prepares plans; secures and tracks permits, etc.  Familiarity with building codes.

Essential Job Skills/Qualifications

  • 3+ Years MEP Systems design experience.

  • Experience in building HVAC, plumbing and electrical design. 

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD MEP /Revit MEP; ability to use compatible M/E/P design software.

  • Ability to develop and manipulate BIM models a plus.

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology or equivalent technical or design-related work experience.

  • Professional Engineering licensure a plus.

  • Familiarity with building codes, ASHRAE guidelines and energy codes and modeling.

  • Ability to work well with an entire project team, including the customer, construction estimator, construction project manager, site engineer, structural engineer, and various vendors and subcontractors.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Organization and ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.

  • Confidential handling of customer and employer intellectual property.

 

Job Responsibilities

  1. Prepare design drawings and specifications, including information tables, details and sketches, based on owner, process or facility programmatic information. 

  2. Responsible for creating plan sections, bill of materials, detail drawings, etc. for projects.

  3. Responsible for managing files such as updating plans sheets and models, posting documents and models, reviewing and posting of subcontractor or vendor submittals, Request for Information, etc.

  4. Development/plotting of proposal, permit and construction drawings and specifications for building projects or process systems.

  5. Develop equipment and/or material schedules and material takeoffs. 

  6. Support Construction Estimators and Project Managers in the preparation of bids scopes for subcontractors and vendors.

  7. Maintain technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and reviewing current relevant technical publications.

  8. Assist Construction PM and Engineering staff with ongoing project functions, including researching product specifications, contacting vendors or other support functions, as needed.

  9. Meet with Customers/Clients as required, to assist in understanding of building and owner process equipment needs.

  10. Maintain a working knowledge of applicable model codes to help assure project compliance with same.

  11. Work closely as part of a collaborative team with the other design disciplines, Estimator/Project Manager, Marketing, Job Superintendent, Customer, Subcontractors, etc.

  12. Send drawings to appropriate State Agencies for approval, permits, etc.

  13. Other items as required.

Working Conditions

Physical demands:  Some lifting may be required (up to 50 lbs), walking, standing, sitting, talking/hearing, keyboarding, writing and reading.

Environmental conditions:  Work primarily performed in a controlled indoor environment.  Some travel/work to construction jobsites.
